What Competition Is About

On Saturday 22 November, Clube de Lutas is taking a whole team to Grappling Industries. Whether you're eight or forty-eight, stepping onto the mat in competition is one of the best things you can do.

Ask anyone whether they'd like to be more resilient, and the answer is always yes. Ask them how a person actually builds resilience, and the answers get vaguer. Here's one answer we see proven on the mats every single year: compete at something you care about, in a safe environment, surrounded by people who support you.

On Saturday 22 November, our team of kids and adults, from first-timers to experienced competitors, will test their skills at Grappling Industries. For many, it will be their very first taste of competition. And that's exactly the point.

Our team is already proving it works

If you want proof of what competition can do, just look at our own team. CDL competitors, kids and adults alike, have been out representing the club at some of the biggest events on the calendar, with great results at the Sydney Grappling Championship, Grappling Industries, and the Pan Pacific IBJJF Championship 2026. Every one of those competitors started exactly where our first-timers will be standing on 22 November: nervous, excited, and taking that first step onto the mat.

A great first step into competition

You don't have to be an expert to compete. Divisions are organised by age, weight and experience, so beginners compete against beginners, and you'll have your coaches and teammates in your corner the whole day. It's real enough to feel the nerves and supportive enough that everyone walks away having learned something, whatever the result.

"You don't learn resilience by being told about it. You learn it by doing something hard and discovering you can handle it."

What losing teaches (and winning does too)

Here's a truth every grappler knows: you learn more from the matches you lose. A loss on the mats comes with instant, honest feedback, and because it happens in a sport built on respect, it comes without humiliation. Your opponent shakes your hand, your coach tells you what to work on, and you go back to training on Monday. That cycle (try, fall short, adjust, try again) is resilience in its purest form, and it works the same whether you're a ten-year-old in your first junior match or an adult stepping onto the mat after a long week at work. Winning teaches lessons too: humility, sportsmanship, and the understanding that success is built on preparation rather than luck.

More than sport: the bigger picture

This belief that martial arts builds confidence, discipline and resilience isn't just something we say at CDL. It's the foundation of everything we do. Clube de Lutas operates under the Kaizen Foundation, a registered Australian nonprofit that delivers martial arts programs in Western Sydney schools, including through its partnership with NSW Rugby League. The same values our competitors will show on the mat on 22 November are being taught to hundreds of school kids across the region, and every CDL membership helps fund that work.

"The goal isn't to build champions. It's to build people who aren't afraid of a challenge."

How to get the most out of competition day

Keep the focus on effort, not outcomes. For parents, the most helpful thing you can say before a match is simple: "Go have fun and try your best." Afterwards, whether they won or lost, ask your child what they learned and what they're proud of; children take their emotional cues from you. For adult competitors, the advice is much the same: treat the day as a snapshot of your training, not a verdict on it. Set a goal you control, like staying calm or attempting that technique you've been drilling, and let the result take care of itself.

Join the team on 22 November
